- On Monday, I attended the inaugural Business Sustainability Summit hosted by Stanford University's Wood's Institute for the Environment. The Summit kicked off with Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, who shared wide-ranging thoughts on her journey from Petroleum Engineer at Mobil (as far as she knows, "the only Secretary of State to have actually fracked a well") to COO and later CEO of REI, one of the most progressive outdoor industry brands and a leader in the Sustainable Brands community, to her current role overseeing millions of acres of public lands and more.

- John Schinter, who was hired as AT&T’s first Director of Energy in 2009, was recently appointed Assistant Vice President of Energy and Smart Buildings.
While continuing with his current role to oversee company-wide energy management efforts, Schinter’s focus will expand to include the deployment of new M2M and big data solutions to optimize facility equipment operational performance and reliability.

- Apple, Ford, HP and 10 other fortune-ranked companies recently received 100 percent ratings in the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) 2014 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) report, a national benchmark for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) workplace inclusion.Other fortune-ranked companies to receive perfect scores include Chevron, General Motors, GE, AT&T, Bank of America, McKesson, Verizon, JPMorgan Chase, IBM and Citigroup.

- Smart business leaders believe that an active corporate social responsibility program is an asset when it comes to attracting top talent. The data agrees. A recent study from Net Impact showed that 35% of American employees would take a 15% pay cut to work for a company committed to CSR, and that 45% would do so for a job that makes a social or environmental impact.

- AT&T says it has placed over 7,500 alternative fuel vehicles in 44 states nationwide, reaching the halfway mark of its commitment to invest up to $565 million to deploy close to 15,000 alternative fuel vehicles by 2018.The 7,500th vehicle – a 2013 compressed natural gas (CNG) Chevy Express van - was recently delivered to a U-verse technician in Lenexa, Kansas.The CNG van is part of AT&T’s plan to deploy up to 8,000 CNG vehicles to its fleet over a five year period through the end of first quarter 2014 – the largest U.S. corporate commitment to CNG to date. The company says the 7,500 vehicles it already has put into service are comprised of 5,474 CNG, 1,996 hybrid electric, 27 extended range electric and 3 all-electric vehicles.

- U.S. commercial buildings can collectively save up to 28 billion gallons of water annually using a new suite of tools co-developed by AT&T and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), the organizations claim.The Building Water Efficiency toolkit is the result of data and lessons from pilot projects that ran across the U.S. during the summer and fall of 2012. The toolkit gives organizations simple, cost-effective resources to build their own water efficiency programs and includes both technical and management tools to design, implement and document water savings. The combination of tools can be used to create the business case for investments in efficient water management.

- AT&T has partnered with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to encourage AT&T customers to skip the bag when purchasing items from its retail stores in Oregon by donating 10 cents to the Nature Conservancy for each check out bag its customers choose to forego.AT&T says its “Skip the Bag” campaign, which runs from now through January 31, 2014, is part of an effort to empower customers with sustainable choices, increase efficiency and minimize impact on the environment. The program is designed to support The Nature Conservancy's efforts to protect and restore the lands and waters on which all life depends.

- AT&T has saved over $151 million in annualized energy savings since 2010 after implementing more than 14,300 energy-reducing projects, according to the company’s 2012 Sustainability Report.These projects have saved nearly 1.3 billion kilowatt hours (kWh), equivalent to the electricity use of 136,340 homes in one year, the report says.AT&T highlighted several milestones, including establishing an energy score card program for 1,000 retail stores, achieving 11 megawatts of alternative energy capacity and joining Rocky Mountain Institute's Portfolio Energy RetroFit Challenge — aimed at scaling energy efficiency.

- AT&T recently became the largest wireless carrier to join the SmartWay Transport Partnership program, a collaboration between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and freight and transport divisions of companies representing the manufacturing, retail, freight and logistics sectors to voluntarily improve fuel-efficiency and curb emissions.
