- Let’s face it — if you’re breaking news with a sustainability report, you’re probably doing it wrong. We came to this realization several years ago as we were changing up our reporting structure. We had moving stories, first-hand accounts and brilliant pictures. We also had great data, and loads of information on governance, policies, training and management. Did it really make sense to hold all this material and send it into the world once a year in a fell swoop?Probably not. So we broke our “report” into a real-time blog, and an online reporting resource that we update at least annually (if not more frequently). A year into this change, I’m happy to say it’s going well.

- Today, Walmart announced a commitment to improving farmed animal welfare across its global food supply chain with one of the most comprehensive animal welfare policies of its kind. The change in policy comes after six hidden-camera videos taken by animal welfare group Mercy For Animals (MFA) at Walmart pork suppliers across the country exposed extreme animal abuse.

- By: Michael Sullivan, IBM Smarter Water Management Executive*The Third in a Series About Machine-to-Machine Technology and Water Management.Properly maintained water systems underpin our quality of life. Inefficiencies in how we manage our precious water resources are very costly. Municipalities must spend a tremendous amount of money moving and treating water, and on average 25 percent of water produced never reaches end users because of leaks and water main bursts. Couple all these expensive repair bills with extreme weather patterns that are either leaving cities with way too much -- or far too little water -- and it’s no wonder why water crises are now ranked as the top threat to economic development worldwide.

- DALLAS, May 19, 2015 — When you see the driver next to you looking at their phone, it’s no longer safe to assume they’re texting. New research1 from AT&T* shows nearly 4-in-10 smartphone users tap into social media while driving. Almost 3-in-10 surf the net. And surprisingly, 1-in-10 video chat.7-in-10 people engage in smartphone activities while driving. Texting and emailing are still the most prevalent. But other smartphone activity use behind the wheel is now common. Among social platforms, Facebook tops the list, with more than a quarter of those polled using the app while driving. About 1-in-7 said they’re on Twitter behind the wheel.

- By: Mark DeGrootMaking time to help others is an invaluable experience. Volunteering benefits those we serve and adds meaning to our daily lives. I am proud of the many hours my AT&T colleagues devote to helping others – not only during National Volunteer Week – but during every other week throughout the year. During this year’s National Volunteer Week, I spent my time supporting the United Cerebral Palsy Land of Lincoln (UCPLL). UCPLL provides comprehensive services to over 600 children and adults with disabilities throughout Central Illinois. Over four days, a group of us completed various activities including helping UCPLL participants with art projects and making the center more beautiful by planting flowers.

- By: Jenny Robertson“Have you ever been to prison before?”Tall, quiet but confident, Lisa asked me this as we sat talking before her graduation ceremony started. Dressed in navy blue prison scrubs, she smoothed the notebook in her lap and chuckled when I confirmed this was my first time in a prison. “Everyone stared at you as you walked in, right? It’s so bad — we all stare, but we can’t help it. Everyone wants to know who you are and why you’re here.”

- When the AT&T Veterans Employee Resource Group National Board asked local chapter presidents for nominations for our 2015 nationally supported organization, I thought of no foundation beyond Gold Star College for Kids. After meeting the foundation’s chairman nearly 2 years ago, I knew I had to be part of this movement to support the children of our heroes lost in combat operations, “Gold Star Kids”. Now, as a proud Gold Star board member, I have been humbled to learn about how the children and families of fallen service members are impacted by the loss of a parent.
