- Today, a group of some of the world’s biggest brands, retailers, NGOs and industry groups launch a Social and Labor Convergence Project, with the aim of improving working conditions in apparel manufacturing across the world.The group says the project seeks to achieve real, sustainable change through the collective development of an industry-wide, standardized methodology for social and labor performance assessment in apparel and footwear supply chains. Through this, the industry believes that it will be able to significantly reduce the amount of money that it spends on duplicated auditing and invest the money saved in improving social welfare for millions of people employed in apparel manufacturing around the world.

- Package labels that clearly detail food product ingredients have become the norm, thanks in large part to demand from consumers who want to be able to make informed decisions about their purchases. But what about other information related to sustainability and how product packaging is sourced?Current product labels do not offer a sufficient or clear explanation of sourcing and sustainability information. We need to recognize, across all industries, that the materials used to develop the packaging of a product is equally as important as the ingredients that go inside a product. Consumers are demanding greater transparency and it is the responsibility of all of us, including manufacturers, regulators and third-party groups, to fulfill this obligation.

- Avery Dennison and Belgian-based Seliplast AG (acronym for Second Life for Plastics) have launched a first-of-its-kind recycling option for label matrix waste made of polypropylene and polyethylene. The programme is now available to converters in Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany and France. This new offering builds on a 2014 pilot established by the two companies in which more than 1,000 tons of plastic laminate and matrix waste in Avery Dennison’s plant in Turnhout, Belgium were converted into new granulate for industrial and household products. The solution eliminates the need for waste material to be shipped outside of the region for manual sorting and recycling, which had previously been required due to the sticky nature of the residue.
