HUNTSVILLE, AL, November 28, 2018 – BASF’s facility in Huntsville, Alabama received the Green Excellence Recognition in Waste Stewardship Award by Honda of America Manufacturing. The award recognizes BASF’s continuous and innovative efforts toward sustainability by significantly reducing production waste and achieving a Zero Waste to Landfill validation from UL. Less than 0.2 percent of waste goes to the landfill at the production facility.

“Through its environmental recognition program, Honda encourages all suppliers to achieve excellence in the areas of energy efficiency, pollution prevention, conservation of natural resources, waste reduction and water management ,” said Alissa Yakali, Honda Sustainability Manager. “It’s fulfilling and enlightening to see how our suppliers are benefiting communities by working to reduce their environmental footprint.“

Between 2016 and 2017, the Huntsville facility reduced trash by over 67 tons, diverted an additional 114 tons of waste from going to a landfill, increased recycling by 113 tons, and increased the direct reuse of waste materials by over 106 tons. The new cooling water tower reduces the facility’s water consumption by 200,000 gallons a year. Additional sustainability practices implemented include the reuse of packaging, working with external vendors to recycle and reclaim metals and plastics, and grinding down broken pallets to use as mulch across the site.

“Huntsville is a showcase site that demonstrates every day how to achieve more sustainable manufacturing and environmental stewardship,” said Dirk Demuth, BASF Senior Vice President, Mobile Emissions, Catalysts Division. “Thanks to hard work and collaboration by the team, this is the first BASF facility and the only manufacturing facility in the Southeast currently validated to UL’s Zero Waste to Landfill standard.“
