Does Your Sustainability Pitch Make Enough Sense to Your CFO?
Does Your Sustainability Pitch Make Enough Sense to Your CFO?

11 years ago - Many experts have observed in recent months that innovating for sustainability seems to be attracting mainstream attention, particularly at Fortune 500 companies and among forward-looking social entrepreneurs. The growth of the Sustainable Brands community certainly supports that claim, with an audience of over 2,800 boasting more than $4 trillion in combined annual revenue represented at SB’13 earlier this summer. At the same time, however, in the majority of cases sustainability is still not part of firms' core strategies. And we can’t expect to be on the right long-term trajectory if all we do is encourage employees to switch to double-sided printing.

Johnson & Johnson, P&G to Halt Use of Microbeads in Beauty Products

11 years ago - Johnson & Johnson has started to phase out the use of polyethylene microbeads in beauty products, and is working on an eco-friendly alternative, after activists from environmental group the 5 Gyres Institute found large amounts of the beads in the Great Lakes.Microbeads are used in beauty products as a means of scrubbing away dead skin. New Frontiers in the ROI of Sustainability
New Frontiers in the ROI of Sustainability

11 years ago - Demonstrating the business case for investment in sustainability — whether in product innovation, supply chain improvements, operational efficiency, employee engagement, communications or an overarching, multi-pronged strategy — remains one of the biggest challenges for the private sector, even for companies that clearly understand the underlying issues. In the absence of commonly-accepted guidelines for relating environmental and social impacts directly to the bottom line, where does one look for the cutting edge in methods that have worked for others?

Five Reasons Every Business Should Care About the New Metrics of Sustainable Business
Five Reasons Every Business Should Care About the New Metrics of Sustainable Business

11 years ago - Every now and then, as I discuss various products Sustainable Brands has to offer to our growing community of brands and solution providers, I mention our New Metrics of Sustainable Business conference and I detect either a blank stare or a confused nod. How do they affect my company, and why should I care?”Simply put, New Metrics (#NewMetrics) is an umbrella term for the latest and most successful ways businesses are creating and capturing entirely new forms of value, or quantifying previously ignored economic, social and environmental impacts and opportunities.

How Might We Re:Imagine Consumption? Conditions for Success and a Call for Collaboration
How Might We Re:Imagine Consumption? Conditions for Success and a Call for Collaboration

11 years ago - Consumption (noun); the action of using a resource. We know consumption is a primary driver of the inherent unsustainability of modern living. For those yet to be convinced that our way of life is not sustainable (adjective — able to be maintained at a certain level), reflect on the fact that last Friday, May 10th, levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere peaked at 400 ppm. Also reflect on the fact that the desire for a $1 T-shirt has driven the most appalling standards in many apparel supply chains and the recent deaths of over 1000 garment workers in Bangladesh.
