Overview

How can companies create new business models, develop new markets and launch new partnerships that contribute to the SDGs?

Join us to learn about Starting Ventures – BASF’s social impact program.

Through Starting Ventures, BASF develops new business models and solutions that empower people with low incomes to achieve a better quality of life. With over a dozen programs in operation around the world and a growing pipeline of new business ventures, Starting Ventures is an example of how BASF contributes to society through its core business operations and lives it corporate purpose “We create chemistry for a sustainable future.”

This webinar will provide an overview to the Starting Ventures program and how it aligns with BASF’s commitment to the SDGs. Webinar participants will learn about the selection process and criteria for this social impact program and details related to program management and impact tracking.

The webinar will then take a deep dive into a successful Starting Venture project on the ground. Participants will hear first-hand from the project manager about the challenges and opportunities of working with a local community on a project that has both a business case and empowers others achieve a better quality of life.

From early on, Manuela had a natural connection to sustainability due to her agricultural background. After a practical education she obtained her diploma at the Technical University of Munich in Agricultural Sciences with a focus on plant production. Manuela joined BASF to work in various functions in the agricultural division first and moved to the corporate sustainability-strategy department later. Her responsibility is to consult selected BASF operating divisions with respect to implementation of sustainability In addition, she also leads the BASF Starting Ventures program.

Thavy Staal has almost 20 years of experience at BASF in the agricultural industry but her current role as the sustainability manager for BASF Agricultural Solutions - Africa & Middle East is her most rewarding job yet. She has held various positions in BASF including global sustainability, global strategic marketing, and marketing manager turf and ornamentals in USA. She is based in Limburgerhof, Germany and manages various smallholder projects in the Africa & Middle East. These projects include exploring innovative business models to evaluating digital tools not only to increase reach but also to improve farmer productivity and awareness on product stewardship and safety topics.
